The AASTN was officially established in 1971 to support the stomal therapy nurses nationally in education and communication. The AASTN have a biennial conference hosted according to a rotating roster from state to state. The Executive committee is formed from members across Australia and meet by phone conference monthly. The AGM in the off conference year is held by telephone conference. The Education and Professional Development Subcommittee meet twice a year to maintain accurate educational and professional documents and manage the credentialing and continuing professional development programs.

AASTN has a total membership of 570, based  in each state and territory of Australia plus some members from New Zealand.
